Fairfax County Jury Awards $500,000 against Anesthesiologist who Trashes Sedated Patient
After a 3-day trial a Fairfax County jury has ruled against an anesthesiologist who made disparaging remarks to her patient while he was sedated. The patient was undergoing a colonoscopy and decided to set his smart phone to record the post-operative instructions. By mistake, however, the phone recorded the entire procedure. During the procedure the anesthesiologist made several inappropriate comments to the patient saying she wanted to punch him in the face, suggested giving him fake diagnoses of hemorrhoids and syphilis, called him “retard”, and made other comments. The jury awarded the patient $100,000 for defamation, $200,000 for medical malpractice, and $200,000 for punitive damages.
