Donald J. Carswell Jr.
Donald J. “DJ” Carswell Jr. successfully represents individuals and families in cases involving personal injury, wrongful death and medical malpractice. As a result of handling a wide variety of cases throughout his career, DJ has earned a reputation as an effective, persuasive and zealous litigator. He is also experienced in appellate work, having authored numerous appellate briefs and successfully argued before the Maryland Court of Special Appeals to secure the affirmation of a protective order for his client, who was a victim of domestic abuse.
Drawing from his diverse legal background, DJ understands every aspect of a case, from initial investigation through trial. He uses his experience and knowledge to identify and resolve potential issues before they arise, saving time and expense for his client. DJ prides himself on being a “people person” and is able to connect clients to his broad network of resources, providing them with whatever help they may need.
Prior to joining Shulman Rogers, DJ worked as an associate attorney for a boutique litigation firm in Rockville, Maryland where his practice involved complex divorce, personal injury and commercial litigation. He also has significant experience in commercial real estate and landlord/tenant matters.
Before earning his JD from the University of Baltimore School of Law, DJ had several valuable legal internships and clerkships. He continues to draw from his experiences working for the Honorable Joseph M. Quirk in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County and former Maryland State Delegate Sam Arora, as well as at the U.S. Government Publishing Office and a personal injury/workers compensation and criminal defense law firm in Baltimore County.
Patient, responsive and willing to go the extra mile to make sure clients feel comfortable, DJ encourages his clients to ask questions and takes the time necessary to ensure they fully understand the details of their case. He recognizes the significant stress his clients face as they navigate their disputes – and is able to diffuse difficult situations with empathy and gentle humor. Clients appreciate the transparency and trustworthiness DJ exhibits in his practice of law and that he approaches every matter with kindness and sensitivity. It is this type of dedication to his clients that sets him apart from his peers.
A native of Montgomery County, Maryland, DJ is an active member of the Maryland Bar Association and the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Maryland, and was honored to be selected as a Fellow for the 2017-2018 class of the BAMC’s Leadership Development Academy. As part of his involvement, DJ and the other Fellows worked with a local charitable organization to organize a one-day program to help members of the community who are homeless or experiencing housing insecurity. DJ has regularly volunteered with local charities, including Interfaith Work and Rebuilding Together, and has provided pro bono legal services to DVS Legal Services, a non-profit dedicated to providing legal services to domestic violence survivors and families in need.
During law school, DJ had the privilege to serve as a member of the University of Baltimore’s Student Bar Association and was chosen to be the school’s liaison to the American Bar Association and Maryland State Bar Association. In addition, he was sworn in as a Rule 16 Student Attorney with the Office of the Public Defender in Baltimore County, Maryland, where he represented defendants in more than 100 bail review hearings, argued numerous motions to suppress, motions to dismiss charges and motions for judgment of acquittals.
